I keep telling you guys - I HAVE a crystal ball - quite a few, actually...........and I bought one of those Kilo Dragon coins with Diamond Eyes here when the offer came up. (I am a Chinese Dragon, I have lot of dragon things - and coins!)

There IS a lesson to be learnt here.......we can phrase it one of two ways......

1) When good deals present themselves, you have to jump on them.......
2) If you snooze, you lose........if you're slow, you blow!

I just picked up a 2008-W Silver Eagle with the Error Reverse in MS 70 graded by PCGS......and was actually meditating on this issue when I saw your post.

While I would normally NOT do something like that - this was $700 less than the averge similar coins on Ebay. Not only was it a sensational deal on a coin that keeps going up - but it returns me to a #1 graded silver eagle set with PCGS - one of only about 28 in the country, something that will add to the reasons it should sell well....down the road.....when the time comes.

Funny, I too am a (year of the) Dragon! :) And I also collect different dragon coins. I wanted the Kilo dragon but had to settle on the 10oz. Bought it a 1-2 years ago now.

I picked up a couple of 10 oz Dragons as well, and a kilo without the diamond eyes that sits out on my desk - only coin that does - love how the light reflects off it!

But about the dragon coins, oddly, I sort of came in thru the other door....when the lunars came out I bought a few sets (and especially extras with the dragon). I bought the gold dragons, and silver in its various sizes - you should have heard people here give me (and FLRacingal - to give her credit too) a really BAD time! (There is another thread where people who were saying "not to" back then were whining that they hadn't and wanted them now! Hindsight is a wonderful thing!)

Then, much later, J-Son started posting about them, and then people started reading the three of us talking about them, and started getting in too! I think I paid $16-18 per lunar coin in silver.......you decide if it was worth it!! (And the ride is far from over - the second series is lovely, but the srt doesn't have the same style, and seems a bit duller overall!)

So, I happily didn't listen (once again) to "those who know much more than me".........and I am more than willing to continue to not listen!! *g*

BUT MY POINT was that those coins are expensive, few can afford to keep adding - and even then - its sort of one dimensional after you have one of each.........

So there I was, reading my coin books about collecting, not finding anything new to stimulate my interest, (I collect rainbowed Morgans, but that's not cheap either, so we only get one now and then) thinking there had to be something cheap and fun to collect.......and then it hit me!

Dragon coins!!!!

Sure, there are gold, siver and platinum dragons (the expensive coins I started with) but what about copper, bronze, nickle, silver-platted, etc.

Most of those examples are fairly cheap expensive depending on all the regular specifics (antiquity, raity, grade, etc)...but the fun part is that I can go to any coin shop or show, in any state or country, and kill time by looking thru those little cheap-y bowls of unwanted coins and look for something almost no one else really thinks to collect.

Not only am I colecting interesting coins in my own Chinese birth sign, (the recent years of the dragons brought forth some interesting ones around the world) but I am also learning about history, geography, other cultures and more.

People forget - and especially GIMmers, who I love but geeeezzzz - not all coin collecting has to be about making money......there is another side to the hobby that can be a blast, as long as you are collecting something you like........be it dates, mintmarks, another country coins, or a topic from cars, to animals, to nudes (Man does not live by dragon coins alone, at least, not this man, I collect a few other things.)

There is really only ONE RULE - whatever you collect....collect something you enjoy!!!!

Good score on those one oz'ers. I paid exactly twice what you did for them.

Great point. I enjoy the dragon's no matter their "value". A few of the old Chinese coins that can be had for .99 are some of the cooler ones I've seen.

Also splurged on these(much more than .99) a while back. I'm quietly ashamed for the premium that I paid on these, but hopfully I'll break even if and when I decide to sell. Sry for the poor quality.

I am also collecting those fan shaped zodiac coins. I'm a horse, so you can imagine the stratospheric premium I had to pay for it, if you're familiar with their price, that is.

That silver unicorn is a beauty! You should take a picture of the other side.

When I start to buy gold, it will be fractional gold coins and small gold bars that I like to collect. I am also a collector and I agree with what Master_Ho said about buying what you like. I love buying and collecting '70's SABs and other silver art bars but I also see certain fractional gold coins and small gold bars that I am possibly interested in collecting.

For me, when it comes to buying PMs, I am a collector first and everything else is a distant second.

If you really had to have one of these, couldn't a good jeweler set diamond eyes in a "stock" Dragon, or is the coin different in some other way that would reveal this?

I have the one on the far right, not the unicorn in the middle - but there you go - I never thought to look for unicorns!!!

I had the fan bought and paid for thru Ebay - but the guy was a scam and they notifed me about him and refunded my money (Yea Ebay!) but I have to still get one of those for the collection.

I would have to agree with you on that. Although I am not much into Christmas art bars, however, this one is very interesting to me IMO. I believe that art bar was minted by the Yonkers Mint. What appears to be the letters "YCE" on the lower left hand corner of that silver art bar was the clue for me.

EDIT: Although, the Lunar Dragon is a very nice coin, I am not really into collecting the Lunar series. I do, however, like certain Perth Mint items and I see myself in the future collecting certain Perth Mint fractional gold and certain silver coins but at this time I do not know which Perth Mint items I will plan on collecting. I guess I am just a weird collector.

EDIT (11-03-2009):: Looks like I was wrong. The letters are actually "YCI" not "YCE". I do not know what "YCI" stands for but I do not think that is a Yonkers Mint silver art bar. For example, the Yonkers Mint "Peace" art bar that I have has the letters "YCE" on it. I am sorry for my error. I do not know who minted that Christmas silver art bar. :signs14:

Honestly, while it might seem logical that the Tiger could go up as much as the Dragons, here is the flaw.......in the oriential world, the Dragon and the Phoenix are the two animal symbols that are the most exalted.....(you see them the most at restaruants, laundry and other Asian establishments.........so the dragon coins (there is no Phoenix in the 12 signs), sold out much faster than the other signs because, in addition to people grabbing their birth signs, or collecting the set, in the orient, the dragon is a great gift. We knew they'd sell out fast!!

Another consideration is that the artwork on both are nice - but where the first series has a more historic oriental style, series 2 is more "natural or modern" and while nice, doesn't seem to be quite as popular as series 1.

So I do not know - nor does anyone else - how it will do down the road - and it may do very well........but not as well as the dragon on any run.

Buy it if you like it - but I wouldn't buy it for a money-making investment.

I didn't but my dragons for anything more than my enjoyment - if they make money down the road (they have) that's an added plus.............

Well, they have a converter button into US dollars - about $67.......I dislike colorized coins but one can undestand, with this one, why they did it that way........and I love the dragon!
